Cocos Island

Off the southern tip of Guam is a small island called Cocos Island. A ferry will take you to the island from the village of Merizo and will only cost about $20.  This little island might be small but it is packed with lots of things to do while you are visiting Guam and the ferry runs all day so you won’t have to worry about getting back when you want to go. Just be sure to go before sunset when the ferry stops for the night.

The island was once the site of a famous ship wreck. In 1690 the Nuestra Senora del Pilar de Zaragosa y Santiago wrecked on the southern reef of the island. It was coming from Acapulco and going to Manila for a festival. The bottom of the ship hit the reef and it soon sunk with all its treasures. On the ship was a shipment of silver swords and other artifacts. Only one chest of silver was reclaimed and it is rumored that millions of dollars of Spanish coins and silver is still somewhere on the bottom of the ocean near the Island. The story adds to the mystery and romance of this resort island.

On Cocos Island tourists can swim, snorkel, and dive as well as skiing, and parasailing. The resort rents out reclining chairs so you can while away the hours on a beautiful beach. There are hiking trails around the island and you can search for war relics. This island is full of tall pines and watch large lizards that live here. If you leave them alone they generally will leave you alone, but they are fun to watch. A lunch buffet is offered at the resort. If you want a snack you purchase tickets from the resort and use them in the many shops around the area.

Deep Sea Fishing at Tumon Bay or Apra Harbor

One of the main tourist attractions in Guam is fishing. Take a day trip out on the ocean to do some deep sea fishing. Tumon Bay and Apra Harbor are the most popular fishing areas but, Guam is near the Marianas Trench which is the deepest part of the ocean. There are many different species of fish that swim and live in the waters. It is advisable to make reservations for a charter before you want to go fishing as there is a demand for this activity and if you have never done deep sea fishing before don’t try to do it on your own. There aren’t many fishing regulations but there are some and the crew of a charter will make sure you know what they are.  No fishing licenses are required at any time of the year. Most charters last 3 to 9 hours and cost anywhere from $350 to $550.

Whether you take advantage of the beach, go diving, or take a deep sea fishing charter you will enjoy your day trip away from Guam.
