Flagstaff Hill Maritime Museum
Edit This
The Flagstaff Hill is a recreated village modelled on an early port. It includes replicas of many 19th century buildigns, and an original lighthouse and lighthouse keepers cottage. The museum recounts the history of the days when the only acces to the region was by ship. Over 160 ships are believed to have sunk on this bit of coast, and shipwreck artefacts can be found in abundance in the museum. One of the most striking is the Loch Ard Peakock, a valuable Minton statue shipped to Melbourne in 1878, but lost at sea before it could reach the International Exhibition for which it was intended.
A special feature of Flagstaff Hill is the theatrette. Here, genuine old maritime films are continuesly screened, showing the perils of sea travel in those days.
