Portland will keep the dedicated visitor busy for at least a day. It has some nice museums on local history and you can take a two hour tour of the aluminium smelter (Mon., Wed. and Fri., 10.00, booking essential, 55232 2671).

Maritime Discovery Centre

Displays on exploration, whaling, wildlife and the Portland Lifeboat, Australia's oldest intact lifeboat.

Battery Point

This fort and gun emplacement was constructed in 1889 and overlooks Portland bay. You can see the old guns and cannons and visit the underground munition depots.

Powerhouse Car Museum

The museum holds an extensive display of Veteran, Vintage & Classic cars as well as motorbikes and static engines. Most of the exhibits have been fully restored to their original condition. The cars are dated from the early to mid 1900's with a few exhibits from the 1960's.

Memorial Lookout Tower

The Memorial Lookout Tower, located on the limestone cliffs on the north side of Portland, is worth the visit for the great view of Portland Bay alone. It was built in 1938 as a water storage facility. In 1995 it was redeveloped and it now serves as a tourist lookout and a WW II memorabilia display. Do not miss the life story of Horrie the terrier, Australias canine war hero.

Botanical Gardens

Established in 1857, the Portland Botanical Gardens are the oldest public Gardens in Australia. The gardens have around 200 native species, as well as many plant species from around the world, including the largest know specimen of Cordyline Australias (New Zealand Cabbage Tree) in the world, as well as (among others) a large collection of Camellia, Californian lilac and green rose.
