Mt Field National Park

Mt Field is the oldest National Park in the state, and an excellent place for day walks, weekend or even a five day hike. The area's geography is mainly influenced by the most recent ice-age, which have left a series of spectacular valleys, lakes, and rugged peaks. In the winter Mt Field is also an excellent place for nordic skiing.

To reach Mt Field National Park, drive west from Hobart through New Norfolk, and follow the road (either A10 or B62) to Westerway (by the way, the first roadhouse you encounter in Westerway makes the best hamburgers in the world). Continuing past Westerway is the township at the entrance to the National Park where you can camp and follow day trails around the forested slopes of the mountains. Another 16 km up an unsealed road brings you to Lake Dobson Car Park, which is the beginning of hikes into the alpine area.
