The Grand Chancellor, formerly the Sheraton Hotel, is the most recent large hotel built in the city, and occupies a prime piece of real estate on the waterfront of Sullivans Cove. A great deal of protest was raised over its construction, since the very position which gives it's rooms such fine views destroyed the view for anyone living north of it. Wrest Point

The Wrest Point Hotel Casino opened in 1973, being Australia's first legal casino (more controversy). It's octagonal tower stands out clearly along the Sandy Bay waterfront, south of the city. Besides rooms, the hotel has a large convention center, a restarant and night club, and of course, the casino. Rooms start at $A 109 per night.

As for Adelphi Court in particular, it is in the suburb of New Town, north of the city. Hobart being so small, this distance is no disadvantage at all. Easy access from the Brooker Highway if you are driving into Hobart, and within walking distance of the Domain.

Hadley's

Hadley's Hotel is in the heart of the city on Liverpool St between Macquarie and Collins just opposite St David's Cathedral. The good thing about this is easy access to shopping, night-life, Salamanca Place, etc. The bad part is no view. The hotel is the oldest of the three listed here, and is the most attractive from an architectural point of view - and of course, it doesn't block anyone else's view of the river!

YHA

First off, there is the YHA hostel at Adelphi Court. For those unfamiliar with the YHA, it is the Australian arm of Hostelling International, one of the oldest hostelling organizations in the world. The YHA is very well organised and quite cheap, and has good coverage of all areas of the state. I highly reccomend the YHA as a means of backpacking around Tasmania.
