Cardwell is part of the tropical Cassowary Coast. Found on the northeast coast of Queensland. It lies on the main road and rail transport routes between Cairns and Townsville. The area surrounding Cardwell is renowned for:-
- World Heritage Wet Tropics Rainforest.
- Coastal Cardwell Range.
- National Park Islands.
- Estuaries.
- Beaches.
Cardwell is a popular Great Green Way tourist destination. The Hinchinbrook Channel provides sheltered boating year round. Hinchinbrook & Goold Islands lie offshore, densely vegetated wilderness areas.
Cultural Heritage:
The Aboriginal Rainforest people inhabit the area. Their cultural heritage is unique, endemic to the region. Nine Aboriginal Tribal Groups form the Girringun Aboriginal Corporation.
In the 1840's landward exploration commenced, namely Edmund Kennedy. A settlement was first established on the coast i.e. the northern end of the Hinchinbrook Channel called Port Hinchinbrook. In 1864 the Town of Cardwell was named after Edward Cardwell, 1st Viscount Cardwell.
Population: 1200 - 1400.
