Surry Hills is a mixed residential and bar/dining area of central Sydney bordered by Central, Darlinghurst, and Paddington. It is a cosmopolitan urban neighborhood with style-conscious residents and visitors. Surry Hills gets its urban edge from the large number of homeless people who are supported by several shelters in the area.

A large gay community lives and parties in Surry Hills with it's focus on Oxford Street at the northern end of the area where it blends with Darlinghurst.

Surry Hills offers the visitor plenty of drinking and dining options. Crown Street is the main north-south artery and home to m any of the drinking and dining venues that visitors will most likely be in the area to sample.

Daytime attractions are less numerous but Surry Hills Market (7am-4pm first Saturday of the month. Shannon Reserve, Cnr Crown and Foveaux St) passes some time. It has secondhand and hand made craft items, including vintage clothes and housewares. The Brett Whiteley Studio preserves the studio space of the 20th century artist and hosts exhibitions of his work.
