Getting Around in Australia
Edit ThisWhile it's very difficult to characterize any one way that Australia transportation should be for travelers, it's important nonetheless to consider how you plan to get around while you're visiting this Oceanic nation. Read on for a brief overview of the most popular modes of transport for tourists in the area.
Cars
Whether you rent a car or use a taxi, cars are the most popular form of transportation throughout Australia by far. Because many of the major cities of the country are spread out by great distances, it is oftentimes absolutely necessary that you have a car in order to get between places. Be careful when driving through the center of the country, however, as gas stations are few and far between.
Tour Buses
Many of the most popular destinations in Australia can only be reached by tourist bus. These buses are set up as tour groups through accommodations in the nearby town. Among the most famous of these are various rainforest tours (like the Daintree) and the Great Barrier Reef.
On Foot
Many of Australia's largest cities, particularly those in the southeastern portion of the country, are well designed and easily traversable on foot. This is oftentimes considered to be the best option for transportation as well, as it provides you with the best opportunity to look at different sites along the way.
Train
Some of the biggest cities on the east coast of Australia are set up with subway systems. There are also trains that run between all of the major coastal cities, though flying between these cities is oftentimes faster and less expensive overall.
