Getting There in Hanoi
Edit ThisWhen it comes to Hanoi, getting there is rather easy because of the accessibility of Noi Bai Airport 35 km north of the city. In Hanoi, there is also the Gia Lam Station and the Hanoi Train Station if you are interested in taking the train.
Getting There by Plane
The Noi Bai Airport is a major hub for most Asian airlines and several European lines, notably Air France. The Airlines vary from major jets to small economy planes, which will give you more options and generally lower the price.
Airport to Downtown
After landing you have several options to travel downtown. Several taxi services can be hired outside of the airport and their fares range from $14 to $18 USD. Know where you are going before booking a taxi, as drivers sometimes take you the long way to collect a larger fare. A public bus route also runs from downtown Hanoi to the Noi Bai Airport. The bus trip will take about an hour and the fare is 5,000 Dong ($0.26 USD).
Buses and Trains
Bus routes and fares vary by company. The routes usually pass through the larger cities in Vietnam, including Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon), and sometimes can be found traveling to China or Laos. There are two train stations in Hanoi, Gia Lam and the Hanoi Train Station. Gia Lam Station is used mainly for trains departing and returning from Nanning, China. The Hanoi Train Station is the main train hub in the city and connects to most large Vietnamese cities. Tickets can be purchased at one of the two counters and it is a good idea to purchase your tickets early, as some destinations can be sold out days in advance.
