If you have some extra time in Hanoi, day trips can provide unforgettable experiences. There are several places that are within easy distance of Hanoi, though most will require 2 or 3 days including travel time. Here's a look at some of the most popular Hanoi day trips.

Halong Bay

Take the bus to Halong Bay to escape the city vibe. The trip is approximately 5 hours one way, so it is possible to do this trip in 1 day, though 2 or 3 days are more popular excursions. Once there, you can explore the islands via a large boat with a group or alone on a kayak. Swimming and exploring the grottoes are great ways to pass the time, and the more adventurous will love the opportunity for a bit of spelunking in the many caves. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a great way to experience the natural beauty of Vietnam.

Sapa

Getting to Sapa involves traveling on an overnight train, so you'll have to have a few days to spend on this visit. It's one of the best Hanoi day trips that you can undertake. The mountains are popular for hiking, and you can roam about the Bamboo Forest or go in search of the Silver Waterfall. Ta Phin Cave adds another dimension of outdoor fun. Sapa is filled with ethnic groups, so you'll get a feel for life outside of Vietnamese cities. Make the trip on the weekend if you want the added bonus of the incredible markets on Saturdays.

Duong Lam Ancient Village

You'll have to hire a car or book a trip with a tour guide to travel the 65 km to Duong Lam Ancient Village. This agricultural village is located on the Red River Delta and contains many interesting sights and things to do. Visit Mong Phu Temple and the 2 temples of the kings, both of whom are considered national heroes. Mia Pagoda is an impressive structure built in the 15th century and surrounded by nearly 300 statues. You may even get the chance to make and sample some traditional foods with the villagers.
