This is a major Vietnam port on the South China Sea, and a transportation, educational and commercial center in the country. Da Nang is also one of the most urban areas in Vietnam. Because there is quite a lot to see and do in this city, here is a guide to the top five things you must not miss.
1. Go to the BeachThere are some gorgeous beaches along the coast of Da Nang, and the weather is perfect for swimming from May to August. It is very safe to swim here, and the beaches have a guard team from 5 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day. China beach is famous because it was an R&R base for American soldiers, so there are many hotels and restaurants near this beach. North of the city is Nam O Beach, where you can catch a boat ride to your destination of choice.
2. Explore Marble MountainThe mountain is made of limestone and contains many caves that were used as Viet Cong hideouts as well as Buddhist temples. You can pick up excellent marble crafts in the area. The place to visit is the Non Nuoc Arts Village, which is 400 years old. This is actually one of five mountains, and each peak is named one of the following elements: earth, gold, fire, wood, and water. Bring a flashlight with you if you want to explore the caves.
3. Check Sculptures from the Champa KingdomThe Cham Museum contains many idols and statues from the Champa Kingdom. This is the only museum that focuses on the Cham culture in the world. It has approximately 5,000 sculptures, of which many are on display in the museum and gardens. The museum also contains artifacts from Tra kieu. You should not miss the decorations on the towers and temples, as they are beautiful pieces of artwork.
4. Visit Rooster ChurchDa Nang Cathedral is also called the "rooster church" due to the weathercock that is situated at the top of the steeple. This cathedral is bubble gum pink, and was built mainly for the French in the 1920s. If you want to attend mass here, then arrive early, as those that are late end up standing in the back.
5. Pass of the Ocean CloudGet out of the city and travel to Hai Van Pass, the highest pass in the country. It rises 1,500 km above sea level, and its name translates to "pass of the ocean cloud." From the top you can see the ocean, Son Tra Peninsula, Tien Sa Port and Da Nang City.
