Thai Airways fly to Mae Hong Son from Chiang Mai three to five times daily, depending on the season. The fare is about US$25 and the flight takes half an hour. Make air reservations early duing high-season as flights are often full. Some prefer to fly least one-way as it is a very winding road and an eight hour trip by bus to Mae Hong Son town.
The mountain scenery and viewpoints are spectacular, and a self-drive car hire is an excellent option and the roads are good. Many are now doing self-drive road trips of the Mae Hong Son loop, which allows for several days of touring without any backtracking.
Public buses are available between Chiang Mai to Mae Hong Son and take about eight hours.
