Compared with many other beach and resort areas in the country it’s still a fairly tame place: A few relatively unobtrusive medium-size resorts have sprung up (the local building code allows no structure to be higher than a coconut palm) but so far there’s no Club Med or anything resembling a mega resort. Koh Samui now has a large number of beach resorts most of which are along the east coast around Chaweng, lamai and Bophut beaches. Many international hotels and resorts now operate on the island of Samui and new luxury Spa resports with pool villas are very popular.

Those who aren’t interested in the newer hotels can still find the “hut-els” along the shores of the various beaches (and though it’s the most populated we still like Chaweng Beach best). This traditional spartan lodging ranges from thatched-roof huts with nothing more than a built-in platform bed to slightly bigger thatched huts with showers and Asian-style toilets (two footrests and a hole in the floor).
