The zoo is set amidst hills of trees and shade on the slopes of Doi Suthep, it has about 500 animals in fenced-in, open-air habitats and also features an open-air bird sanctuary. Next door is Chiang Mai's arboretum, an ideal spot for walking and relaxing.
