Top 5 Must Do's in Cagayan de Oro
Edit ThisMany of Cagayan de Oro's best sights are natural areas that are located just outside of the city. You'll definitely want to visit the lush forests, peaceful waterfalls and underground caves that surround Cagayan de Oro. There are also some not-to-be-missed sites within the city, including the cathedral and the culture museum. Here are World 66's top 5 must do's in Cagayan de Oro.
Significant for both its natural beauty and its history, Macahambus Cave is a must-do on your trip to Cagayan. The underground cave includes a 130-foot gorge and a beautiful view over the Cagayan de Oro river. The ravine is filled with plants and trees, making it both pretty and cool. The cave was also the site of a battle between the American and Philippine troops in the year 1900, during the American-Philippine War.
2. Catanico Falls
Located a picturesque 45-minute walk (or 20-minute drive) from the city center is this beautiful waterfall hidden amongst huge boulders. There is a natural pool at the bottom of the falls. The area is entirely natural, with no electricity. It does have picnic areas where you can cook with charcoal or lay out sandwiches for lunch, just remember to bring your own water, as there is no suitable drinking water around. There are also toilets in the area. Entrance is P2, and remember to bring your bug repellent!
3. Malasag Reforestation Area & Eco-Tourism Village
The reforestation area of Malasag is great for biking, horseback riding or mountain climbing. There are pretty spots for picnics, and it's an excellent place to catch the sunrise or sunset. From the top of the hill there's a great view of the city and surrounding bay area, so bring your camera. One of the bigger draws is the Eco-Tourism Village, which contains replicas of Mindanao tribal houses. Always remember to bring out anything you bring in.
4. San Agustin Cathedral
The Cathedral of Saint Augustine manages to feel both Spanish and Gothic with its tall tower and expansive walls filled with stained glass windows. The windows themselves are worth the trip to the cathedral. The intricate designs were created and installed in the 1800s, and the wooden cross that stands outside the cathedral was erected in 1888. Across the street is Gaston Park, with its water-dancing fountain.
This museum is located in Capitol University and displays the ethnohistory of Cagayan de Oro. There are also artifacts, antiquities, arts and crafts from the cultures in the surrounding areas of northern Mindanao. The archives contain documents and photographs from the Spanish era of Cagayan de Oro. You can also grab a cup of coffee from the shop before exploring the art gallery.
