Festivals in Cagayan de OroEdit This
The Philippines is renowned for its festivals and celebrations. In Cagayan de Oro, the biggest festival is the Kagay-an celebration. There are few others that can compete with the revelry of Kagay-an, but there are some more events scattered through the year. Still, most of the celebrations in Cagayan de Oro revolve around Kagay-an and take place in the summer or early autumn.
From August 26 to 28, the locals of Cagayan de Oro pay homage to the city's patron saint: St. Augustine of Hippo. There are three days of activities that see the locals in native dress and doing traditional dances in the streets. There are cultural shows, competitions, concerts and more. Some of the biggest highlights of the festival include the Miss Kagay-an beauty pageant, the Higaonon Street Dancing competition, and the Golden Float Parade. There's also a fluvial (boat) parade on the Cagayan de Oro river.
This culinary exhibition is sponsored by the hotels and restaurants of Cagayan de Oro and takes place in mid-August, usually just before Kagay-an. The main events are held at the Limketkai Center and include culinary shows, food demonstrations, cooking competitions and seminars. The team cook offs are one of the bigger draws of the event.
Tickets for events are P60 per day or P150 for the entire 3-day festival. Students can get their tickets (with identification) for P45 or P115, respectively.
Sakay-Sakay Lambago Festival
This annual boat race is held in August and allows the people of Cagayan de Oro to show off their boating skills. The boats are made of local wood and are manned by anyone from fishermen to restaurateurs. The race is extremely colorful and filled with energy, and is a great way to spend your time on the banks of the Cagayan de Oro river.
Mindanao Global Peace Festival
Each year in late September or early October the Mindanao Global Peace Festival comes to Cayagan de Oro. The festival is meant to promote the growth of unity amongst people of different cultures. The event begins with high school assemblies where student representatives are selected as ambassadors of peace. There is a peace parade, which leads up to the main peace rally that takes place on the Capitol grounds and the grounds of Limkatkai Center.
Holy Week Trek
On Holy Thursday (the eve of Good Friday) each year in March or April, the locals of Cayagan de Oro head to Malasag Hill where they march the 3 km Via Crucis, or Way of the Cross. This show of faith that marks the fourteen stations of the cross ends at the Corsillo Retreat House.
