Budget Travel Ideas in Cagayan de Oro
Edit ThisCagayan de
Oro in the Philippines is an excellent travel location for someone
trying to keep a low budget. It is known as the city of Golden Friendship.
Located on the Mindinao peninsula, Cagayan de Oro is still only a short
boat ride or flight away from the other parts of the Philippines. If
you go during the summer time, be sure to dress appropriately, since it
routinely tops the 100-degree mark!
What to Do
There are some
excellent activities one could participate in while sticking to a tight
budget. Since the city is near a river, there are excellent white water
rapid opportunities. As a tourist, chances are you aren’t going in
their rainy season, which is good, since that means that even amateurs and
beginners can go on the rapids without injury risk. There is also
kayaking available on these rivers. Cagayan de Oro is also known for its
outdoor large movie screens. This provides a cheap way to catch a
flick, while relaxing in the open air. You can bring meals and have a
family picnic as you watch the movies. The Philippines is also known
for “videoke”, like karaoke, which are located in bars and only cost a
dollar or two. They are very fun! Cagayan de Oro is full of
shopping opportunities. The malls sell a bevy of items such as
clothes, shoes, trinkets, and souvenirs.
Where to Eat
Cagayan de Oro
has many places to eat at if you are looking to save a buck or two.
They have many restaurants that specialize in Filipino foods, such as
the Kagayanon restaurant. They offer nice affordable prices and a wide array of Filipino foods and ostrich meat. They also
have other international cuisines available. La Tegola is a fine
Italian restaurant, which offers great wine selections and a quiet ambiance. Vienna Kaffehaus offers European foods.
Where to Stay
Cagayan de Oro has a wide range of areas to lodge while you are visiting. There are two hostels, the MASS SPEC and the YMCA, which offers cheap lodging. Mid-range options that are more of the hotel variety are the Miami Inn, Philtown Hotel and others. These places are definitely acceptable, and compare to two to three star hotels in the United States. Remember, if you are on a trip, chances are you aren’t spending all your time in your hotel room, so this is a chance to save money.
