Cebu City is the capital as well as the major historical landmark of the island Cebu. Cebu City Sights incorporate various historical monuments standing as a mute witness to its glorious historical past.

Santo Nino Basilica

During your trip in Cebu, you must pay a visit to Santo Nino Basilica, the oldest Roman Catholic Church in the Philippines. Built in the 16th century, this church preserves the oldest sculpture of Jesus Christ as a child. There is a museum inside featuring ancient relics like ancient furniture, vestments and various religious statues. The church is frequented by a large number of tourists, devotees, pilgrims, and regular churchgoers. The church remains open from 08:00 a.m. to 09:00 p.m.

Taoist Temple

Taoist Temple is a typical Chinese structure constructed in 1972 by the large Chinese community of Cebu. Built about 300 meters above sea level, this temple champions Taoism, a religious principle which was propagated by the ancient Chinese philosopher Lao Tze. Every Wednesday and Sunday, Taoist devotees perform religious rites, climbing about 99 steps of the temple to light incense and have their fortunes soothsaid by a monk. Located in the affluent Beverly Hills, this temple is ornate with its roof decorated in typical Pagoda manner. Besides, its entrance will remind you of the Great Wall of China. The top of the temple provides an amazing vista of the surrounding landscape.

Magellan’s Cross

Magellan’s Cross is a major tourist attraction in Cebu. Around 500 years ago, Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan set a huge Crishtian cross in Sugbu--now known as Cebu--to propagate Roman Catholic faith. The original cross is now enshrined in a tindal wood cross for protection from people who were damaging the cross under some superstitions. A small chapel in front of the Cebu City Hall along Magallanes Street has the cross secured there. The easiest way to come here is by taxi, as all the drivers know this place.

Fort San Pedro

The oldest and smallest fort in the Philippines, San Pedro was built by the Spaniards to defend themselves from the foreign invaders. Triangular in shape, the fort has 2 sides overlooking the sea, and the third one facing the city is where the entrance is located. The 3 sides of the fort are known as La Cencepcion, Ignacio de Loyola and San Miguel. About 14 cannons housed inside the fort bear testimony to the magnificence of the bygone Spanish era. The fort, now transformed into a museum, displays Spanish artifacts, paintings, sculptures, fragments of headgear, swords and other weapons used in the days of the Spanish as well as cannons and porcelain pieces. Situated in Barangay San Roque, the fort is one of the most enchanting tourist spots in Cebu City.

Basilica Minor del Santo Niño

Edit This

As a baptismal gift to Queen Juana, Magellan gave a black image of the Infant Child which, on April 27, 1565, managed to remain unscathed after a fire razed Cebu to the ground. The Basilica Minor del Santo Niño was built by Captain Miguel Lopez de Legaspi and Fr. Andres Urdaneta on the spot where the miraculous icon was found. The religious statue has since been enthroned in the basilica, with the original kept inside the convent and a replica enshrined at the church's side altar.
