Being the capital and largest city in Papua New Guinea, Port Moresby is located on the Gulf of Papua near the southeastern coast and features a tropical monsoon climate. The Monsoon Seasons

Because Papua New Guinea is located south of the equator, the climate is tropical. The northwest monsoon season occurs from December to March, and is considered the worst time to visit Port Moresby. This is also referred to as the wet season and it produces large amounts of rainfall during this time. The region is also considerably hot during these months.

The southeast monsoon season occurs from May to October. During this time the temperatures are generally between 27 and 37 degrees C during the day and slightly cooler at night. It is always warm and considerably humid, and there is always chances of rainfall.

April and November are the only 2 months of the year that do not fall within one of the monsoon seasons, making them the ideal time to visit Port Moresby. In addition, Port Moresby is considered more dry than other areas of Papua New Guinea, with an annual rainfall at about 1000 mm. This can mean that even if you do decide to travel during the monsoon seasons, you may or may not experience heavy rainfall.

Temperatures in Port Moresby

Temperatures generally do not get too hot, but this region can be humid at times. The dry season occurs from December to late May and has milder temperatures during the day, averaging around 25 degrees C. These months also are known to have more infrequent rainfall.

The heat and humidity rise considerably during the wet season, beginning in late May and lasting until December. Between January and April there is the chance of cyclones occurring.

What to Wear in Port Moresby

Lightweight cotton clothing is best during the hotter and humid months from May to December. Slightly heavier clothing should be worn during the winter months. It is wise to take along rain gear, regardless of when you visit, because this region is known to be wet all year round.
