Located in Papua, New Guinea Port Moresby sights are a delight for tourists. This capital city is on the shore of the Gulf of Papua and is inhabited by the Motu-Koitabu peoples who are known for their beautiful dances and bright colorful costumes.

Diving

Founded in 1873 by Captain John Moresby, Port Moresby offers some of the best diving in the world. Due to WW2, there are several wrecks to see underwater and many reefs. There are around 30 charted dive sites within an hour of the airport so you will not need to go far to get their. With waters at 24c to 29c it is a comfortable excursion all year round for both novice and experienced divers. There are several dive spots offered no more then a 10 minute boat ride. Also, if you want to see the not to be missed Eastern Fields, you can catch a live excursion in Port Moresby. With rare fish and coral, this area is not to be missed. There is only one vessel offering the live aboard trips to the Eastern Fields, The Golden Dawn out of Port Moresly so call ahead as the trips are only made 8 times per year.

The Varirata National Park


A visit to Port Moresby would not be complete without a trip to the Varirata National Park. This park, modeled upon Yellowstone in the USA, is truly a must see site. It is a cool, refreshing place to visit, especially during the hot and sticky months from May to December. There is a system of lookouts so that you can enjoy gorgeous panoramic views of the lush tropical vegetation and waters. The wildlife in the area you might see includes wild pig, spotted cuscus, anteaters, deer, bandicoots, and pythons. The park also is home to several varieties of butterfly.

National Capital Botanical Gardens

National Capital Botanical Gardens is high on the list of must see sites in Port Moresby. The garden was established in 1971 as a teaching garden for the UPNG biology department, and has an extensive collection of Papua New Guinea orchids. There are also several local animals on display, including tree climbing kangaroo, birds of paradise and cockatoos. The garden is also home to a 19ft reticulated pythin who is one of the largest in captivity. The sights of Port Moresby are fairly extensive especially for nature lovers. Other must see places include Idlers Beach, The National Parliament House, Bomana War Cemetery, National Museum of Art and Moitaka Wildlife Sancuary.
