Shopping in Port Moresby

Edit This

Port Moresby shopping is an exciting experience where you can shop for local handicrafts. There are many shops where goods are sold duty-free and various shops in the markets that showcase a wide range of local handicrafts made in Papua New Guinea.

Handicrafts

You can buy handicrafts from the following places in Port Moresby:

  • Stalls: There are stalls outside the main gate of the Holiday Inn that sells woven baskets and street paintings. You can get a good deal if you try to bargain the prices.
  • Tabari Place Handicraft Market: Tabari Place handicraft market has a good selection of breast plates, jewelry, bilums (string bags) and hats. Before you go to this market you might try to find a person from Port Moresby to go with you. You may be quoted very high prices if you are spotted as a tourist. While shopping you can try to negotiate the prices in a friendly way but should not get too adamant about it.
  • PNG Art: PNG Art displays a number of carvings and crafts from all over Papua New Guinea. Many of the handmade items are produced in local villages and are available at reasonable rates. The shop is located on the highway to the airport at the Gordon’s end of Spring Garden Road.
  • Beyond Art: Beyond Art is a handicraft and jewelry shop next to the Crowne Plaza Hotel in the downtown area of Port Moresby. It displays a wide range of handicrafts.
  • Ela Beach Craft Market: Ela Beach Craft International School hosts the Ela Beach Craft market on the last Saturday of every month. The goods sold here are unique and not seen at other shops or markets. They have a great selection of carvings, weavings, baskets and paintings along with shells and other local crafts. The market starts at 8 a.m. and ends by 11 a.m.
