Getting There in Port Moresby
Edit ThisWhen planning your trip to Port Moresby, Getting There is usually at the top of your list of things to do. Given that this city is the capital of Papua New Guinea, getting there is much easier than getting to smaller towns in the country. Here are some tips when planning your trip there.
Getting There by Plane
The Jacksons International Airport (IATA airport code: POM), better known as the Port Moresby International Airport, serves the city of Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea. This is your best starting point when looking for air fares to Port Moresby not only because this airport is the largest one in the country but also because it is the main hub for the largest local airline, Air Niugini.
Direct flights are only available from certain countries in Asia such as China and the Philippines. Only five airlines offer direct flights to and from Port Moresby, being of course Air Niugini, the one with the most destinations.
Getting from the Airport to the City
If you are arriving from outside Papua New Guinea, you will first arrive at the International Terminal, where you will have to go through customs. After you have cleared customs you will be able to pick your bags.
The airport is just five miles (about eight km) away from downtown Port Moresby, so you will be able to catch a bus or taxi to your hostel or hotel. Most four-star hotels and above have complimentary shuttle service, so make sure to mention your arrival date and time, and flight number to the hotel when booking your hotel reservation. It is not a good idea to travel by bus to your hotel if you are carrying large suitcases.
