Getting Around in Port Moresby

Edit This

Port Moresby Transportation is a bit complicated because the city is quite spread out. Though the city started near the current port area, it has now reached all the way to the top of its highest hills. Neighborhoods are quite far from each other, and the public transportation system is quite different from that of most European and North American countries. Due to these difficulties, it is a good idea to either get around by rental car or by taxi.

Getting Around by Car

After arriving to the Jacksons International Airport (IATA airport code: POM), you will find several car rental agencies nearby. There are various complimentary shuttles that will take you to your preferred car rental agency. Having an international driver's permit will make the car rental process much smoother and prevent you from having to pay extra fees or higher deposit fees for not being able to produce legal proof of your driving ability.

When driving outside Port Moresby, don't be surprised if you run into people demanding compensation for letting you use a certain road. Rather than getting into arguments, just provide a couple bills: enough to cover a soda. While this practice is not legal, it is easier to pay than to end up with a cracked windshield if somebody should throw a rock at you for not providing some spare change.

The airport is about 5 miles (or 8 kilometers) from the center of Port Moresby.

Getting Around by Taxi

When using a taxi, it is best that you let a hotel, shopping center or restaurant arrange for it, rather than just flagging one down the street. Avoid drawing attention to yourself by wearing flashy, expensive jewelry or sunglasses, or carrying large, heavy suitcases. Also do not carry large amounts of money when using a taxi service.
