Eating Out

Edit This
Kalaw has many great places to eat and the food is especially good because of the freshness of the vegetables and other ingredients in the area.
Thu Maung serves a traditional Myanmar meal.  Although the waitresses cannot speak much English this is a place it is well worth eating at.  They will give you a menu but just order a curry and a tomato salad.  Ignore the fried rice and other items on the menu.  With your curry will come a variety of side dishes which changes every day.  This generally includes a spicy balachaung, soup, fried vegetable or two and rice.  The staff will continuously refill the plates as they empty.  Once the main course is done you will be served sliced fruit, pickled tea salad, shan tea and nuggets of palm sugar.  The price is astonishingly reasonable.  Around $2 per person as of Nov 2006.

A great place to get a traditional-style Burmese meal.  I highly recommend ordering any of the curries-chicken or mutton or whatever, and the green tomato salad, leave the rest to them.  They will bring you side dishes of all sorts, balachaung, pickled bamboo shoots, soup, fruit and jaggery to eat with your rice.  They will also continuously refill your plates until you are stuffed and the meal will cost only a couple dollars.

One of my most favorite places to eat in Kalaw it is across from the market on the main "superhighway" that passes by more..
