Miri is situated in northern Sarawak. It is a cosmopolitan city bustling with both foreigners and locals. Miri must do's include visiting national parks, temples and markets. The area boasts spectacular natural beauty and Miri hosts many festivals.

Gunung Mulu National Park

The park was founded in 1974 and it is managed by Sarawak Forestry. Gunung Mulu National Park was declared  a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. It has an area of 754 squared kilometers. At this park is Sarawak Chamber which is the biggest natural cave in the world. The room is 2,300 feet long and 1,300 feet wide. Deer Cave, Benarat Cavern, Wind Cave and Clearwater Cave are other noteworthy caves in the area. Clearwater cave has an extraordinary underground water system which is formed by rivers. There have been many expeditions in this area including the Royal Geographical Society expedition which occurred from 1977 until 1978. The park is also notable for its limestone karst formations. Some of the limestone in this area are between 40 and 90 million years old. Animals in the park include gibbons, orangutans, rhinoceros, horn bill and bears.

Taoist Temple

The Taosit temple is situated in Krokop which is 10 minutes from the city center . It is the biggest Taoist Temple in South East Asia. This magnificent temple was built in 2000 and it combines traditional design with modern architecture. Tourists are welcome to visit the temple but respect should be shown for local culture and traditions while at the temple. Wear clothing that covers your shoulders and shorts should not be worn. In certain areas of the temple you will need to remove your shoes.

Tamu Muhibbah Market


Immerse yourself in the hustle and bustle of the market for a unique cultural experience. There are many markets in Miri however Tamu Muhibbah is one of the more popular markets. It is an open market where locals gather from the city and local villages to sell their products. The vibrant market comes to life on weekends so Saturdays and Sundays are the best time to visit. There is a variety of goods being sold and the market is a good introduction to the different foods available in Miri. Food from the jungle is available such as eggplants, ferns and bamboo. Sampling some of the tropical fruits a must do.

Canada Hill


Canada Hill offers views over the city. There is a observation deck specially built for visitors. There are walking and jogging paths so that you can enjoy the scenery. This is also where the first oil well was found. The oil well was dug in 1910 and is now an important historical monument and tourist attraction. The oil well is 30 meters high and is nicknamed The Grand Old Lady. Next to this is the Petroleum Museum which displays photographs. At this museum you can learn more about the history of petroleum.

Scuba Diving


Scuba diving in Miri is an exciting activity. There are beautiful coral formations as well as exotic marine life. You can arrange to go out on a dive with one of the local dive shops.
