Getting In and Around

Miri is accessible by air and land. If you are planning to visit this city you can either take a plane or ride a bus. Of, course riding a plane is faster but it is more costly. Miri is served by the Miri International Airport and several airline companies like Malaysian Airlines, AirAsia and MASWings operate regular flights to and from Miri. You can also choose to take the bus to get to Miri. This will take you more or less 5 hours to reach the city of Miri and the bus ride will cost you about $18. However, you might need to change buses to get to Miri. Getting around the city is a bit easier; you can either take the mini-bus or you can rent a taxi.


There are lots of accommodation options in Miri. There are hotels that cater for budget backpackers, business and leisure travelers. For budget travelers, the best option would be to stay at the Minda Guesthouse. The guesthouse provides clean rooms, complimentary breakfast, Wi-Fi and laundry services at very affordable rates. There are several hotels that offer great accommodations and are not very expensive.

Eating Out

There are several street-side and regular restaurants in Miri. One of the places you would not want to miss is the Chinese Hawker Center situated right in the heart of Miri. Here you can find mouth-watering dishes such as curry rice, fried rice noodles, laksa, steamed chicken and more all at very reasonable prices. Another well known foodie destination is Cafenika & Catering, which serves halal approved food like chicken chops, nasi lemak, nasi briyani and mee kolok. You should also try the Sarawakian’s version of rice wine called “tuak”.

Things to Do and Places to See

There are lots of places to see and things to do in the small city of Miri. You can visit the Old Lady National Monument, the San Ching Tian Temple or the Lambir National Park. If you want to enjoy the waters of Miri you can got to Taman Selera or Esplanade Beach, both of which are great for picnics.

Nightlife and Entertainment

Miri has several nightlife and entertainment venues where you can enjoy the night out. Several pubs, bars and night restaurants offer vibrant entertainment and live music performances. Well known night spots here are the Cherries Berries, Chaplins,  Wheels (the food is excellent and reasonably priced) the Siam Thai Bar and the Island Bar & Pub or you could try the Tip Top Pub & Eating House in the old town.
