Getting There in Melaka

When traveling to Melaka, getting there is easy and can be done a number of ways. Depending on your budget, preferences and the preferences of your family and traveling companions, there is a variety of methods of transportation to get into this beautiful South Asian city.

Traveling By Road

The most popular and most convenient way to travel into Melaka is by driving. A 90-minute drive from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport, driving south on the North-South Highway is common as the majority of travelers fly into this location. If traveling north from Johor Bahru, it is a 2 1/2-hour drive on this same Highway.  With multiple rest stops, kiosks, and viewpoints, the drive into Melaka is scenic and enjoyable as you pass through tropical evergreen forests and by lush palm plantations.

Traveling By Plane

The closest airport to Melaka is the Batu Berendam Airport located about 10 km from Melaka. Flying into this and other airports such as the Kuala Lumpur Intertational Airport is a common way to get into Malaysia, but renting a car or taking a taxi or bus into Melaka is necessary.

Traveling By Bus

There are multiple long-distance buses that operate to Melaka from larger, surrounding cities and local airports. Cheaper than renting a car, taking a bus from an airport to the city is economical and easy. If you plan on keeping all your activities in the city of Melaka, traveling by bus is your best bet as you can travel from destination to destination by foot or bus once in the city.
