Sightseeing

As a family, you can visit historical sites like Hang Li Poh’s well, Christ Church and the Satdhuys. The Hang Li Poh’s well was built by the followers of Princess Hang Li Poh. It is situated along Jalan Laksamana Cheng Ho in Melaka City. The well was the only supply of water during periods of drought as it never ran out of water. Nowadays, people throw coins in the well, hoping to have their wishes fulfilled.

There is also the Stadhuys building which became the Museum of History and Ethnography and has on display variety of Dutch costumes and paintings. It has a clock tower and a miniature windmill.

Christ Church was built in the 18th century and is also testament to Dutch architecture. It was built to honor the Dutch occupation of Malacca and took more than 11 years to complete. The church has wooden ceiling beams made from a single tree each. There is a frieze of the “Last Supper.”

In addition to the above sites, the other famous sites are The Eye on Melaka, Portuguese Square, Baba Nonya Heritage Museum and Cheng Hoon Teng Temple.

Beaches

Melaka is home to a number of beaches including Pulau Besar, Tanjung Kling, Pantai Kundur and Tanjung Bidara. All these beaches have breathtaking natural beauty. Several resorts and restaurants are along the beach. They offer plenty of activities for tourists like scuba diving and snorkeling. There are also food stalls available that sell all kinds of food.

Shopping

Jonker Street is a haven to a variety of shops that sell everything from toys and antiques to fashionable dresses and accessories. Batik dresses are quite popular. There are also handicrafts like vases and wooden carved artifacts. You can also buy souvenirs and mementos. While doing shopping, you will be witness to karaoke sessions where the audience play and dance to music with a lot of joie-de-vivre. Also known as Jonker Walk, Jonker Street has plenty of restaurants to suit your palate.

Eating

Aside from the famous sights that it offers to see, Melaka is well-known for its assortment of delicious cuisine. Malay, Portuguese, Chinese, Indian, and Thai food dishes are very popular and can be found easily.  There are lots of restaurants along Jonker Street that sell all kinds of cuisine. You can partake of local seafood dishes like crisp barbequed squid and curry noodles. You will also find lots of restaurants in Portuguese Square that tickle your palate with traditional Portuguese food.
