Budget Travel Ideas in Langkawi
Edit ThisTravelling to Malaysia can be quite inexpensive for visitors, and the islands of Langkawi are no different. For budget travel in Langkawi you should keep in mind the four different aspects of travelling: transportation, accomodations, food, and entertainment.
Transportation
If good old fashioned walking doesn't ring your bell there are many inexpensive methods of transportation available in Langkwai. Since the bus system there is unreliable and infrequent many visitors will choose to take a taxi instead. Taxi's can be paid per fare or rented for the hour. Fares generally average around a few American Dollars. If you plan on travelling around the island often on your visit you would be better off renting a car, as this will end up being cheaper than taking taxis. Even more economical is renting a motorcycle. Motorcycles are a regular form of transportation in Asia and you will oft see them used as transport for an entire family. The most environmentally friendly method of travel of course is bicycle, which can be rented by the day, and making touring the lovely countryside a thoroughly enjoyable experience.
Accomodations
Hotels are often the most expensive part of travel, although they do range in price. In Langkwai you can choose from several affordable hotels in the area, starting from $59 per night. For the most budget friendly accommodation, check out one of the many hostels on the island, which start at $6 per night.
Food
The cuisine in Langkwai varies greatly in taste and price. Being an international destination, travelers can find food from all over the world. Most local cuisine consists of different types of seafood. While the restaurants are fantastic, a not to be missed item is the Hawkers in the street. In various markets and street corners you will find merchants selling all sorts of Malaysian specialties at very reasonable prices. Hawkers are the most economical food choice and often the most varied!
Entertainment
Most tourist activities can be fairly pricey on Langkwai and don't suit the budget traveler. The best way to see all that Langkwai has to offer is to enjoy the natural beauty of the island. Take time to explore the beaches; grab some snorkeling gear, which can be rented inexpensively, and make your own snorkel adventure. At night enjoy the live music and dancing that many of the bars and restaurants have to offer.
Langkwai, if navigated correctly, can be a very affordable place to travel, just be wary of the many tourist traps and instead try to frequent the many smaller family-run businesses available.
