Sights in Kuching
Edit ThisKuching, as the capital of Sarawak, is one of the highlights of the
region in Malaysia. With its beautiful waterfront, historic buildings
and hilly surrounds, it's well worth a visit. The word Kuching means
"cat" in the Malay language.
Your list of Kuching Sights
should include the following:
Tua Pek Kong Temple
The Tua Pek Kong Temple is recognized as the oldest Chinese temple in
Kuching. If you visit Kuching during an important festival like the
Hungry Ghost Festival, the temple will come alive as locals pay respects
to their ancestors. A visit to the nearby Hong San temple, belonging to
the Hokkien community, is also worth a visit.
Warriors
Monument Park
Warriors Monument Park is located next to the museum and is a
favorite spot for families. It pays tribute to past warriors and has a
special monument dedicated to past heroes. In the night time, the
monument is lit up in its full glory.
Waterfront
A visit to Kuching would be incomplete without taking a stroll along
the waterfront promenade on Main Bazaar. It’s great for people watching,
to enjoy a spectacular sunset, or to watch the to and fro of the bum
boats. When you have worked up an appetite, enjoy local delicacies such
as satay and cendol from the food stalls.
Bako National Park
A day trip to the Bako National Park is a worthwhile experience for
nature lovers. A short trip by road from Kuching will get you to the
jetty to catch a boat to the park. The journey by boat is in itself an
enjoyable outing. Marvel at interesting sandstone formations, mangroves
and tranquil fishing villages along the way. Don’t forget to set aside
ample time to explore the walking trails and enjoy the flora and fauna
of the park.
Sarawak Cultural Village
The Sarawak Cultural Village is the window for learning about the
different tribes that have inhabited Sarawak over the centuries.
Activities to check out include watching the vibrant cultural dance
performances, taking an interesting tour of the long houses and tasting
unique Sarawakian food.
Civic Center
Visit the Kuching civic center located at Jalan Taman Budaya and get a bird's eye view of the city. Within the civic center, you can also visit the Sultan Iskandar Planetarium, a first of its kind in Malaysia. Enjoy the unique experience of the MirrorDome, a digital show extravaganza.
