Top 5 Must Do's in Kuala Lumpur

Edit This

There are many beautiful sights in Malaysia's Kuala Lumpur, but if you're looking for Kuala Lumpur's "must do's," you have to go for variety. Learn about Kuala Lumpur's history at the National Museum, and its wildlife at KL Bird Park. The Batu Caves are a great natural site, while the Menara Tower represents Kuala Lumpur's modern architecture. And of course you have to visit at least one temple, with Sri Maha Mariamman being the best in the area.

National Museum Jalan Damansara, Lake Gardens +60 3 2282 6255 Train: Kuala Lumpur Central Station

The National Museum is housed in a building constructed in the style of the Sarawak longhouses. Outside are murals depicting the culture and history of Malaysia. Inside you'll find artifacts that will introduce you to Kuala Lumpur's history, economy, flora and fauna, arts and crafts, weaponry and even Malay shipwreck treasures. A big draw is the 19th century stilt house in the gardens. Free tours in English and French are offered at 10 a.m. on Tuesdays and 11 a.m. on Thursdays. Entrance is RM2, with children under 12 being free. The museum is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

KL Bird Park 920 Jalan Cenderawasih, Lake Gardens +60 3 2272 1010 Train: KTM Kuala Lumpur Station

Enter the free-flying bird park of Kuala Lumpur to see its 160 species of Asian birds, including flamingos, parrots, ostriches, eagles and hornbills. The birds are an incredible and colorful sight to see, as are the incredible flowers and plant life within the park. For added fun, visit during the 2 p.m. or 4 p.m. feedings of the ostriches or the 2:30 p.m. eagle feeding. Kids will appreciate the bird shows that run daily at 12:30 and 3:30 p.m. and feature the parrots.

Batu Caves Sri Subramaniam Temple +60 3 2287 9422 Train: KTM Batu Caves Station or Sentul Station

The Batu Caves are natural limestone and the setting for an incredible Hindu shrine. The 272 steps to reach the main cave entrance are covered with monkeys and are steep, so bring some water and maybe some peanuts for the "locals." When you enter the caves you'll be dazzled by the hundreds of colorful Hindu statues. The caves also boast the world's largest statue of Lord Murugan.

Menara Tower 2 Jalan Punchak, Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve +60 3 2020 5448 Train: KL Monorail Raja Chulan Station

The Menara Spire is not the tallest in Kuala Lumpur (the Petronus Towers hold that title) but it does offer the best views of the city. Head to the top of the fourth highest telecommunications tower in the world to enter the revolving restaurant and observation deck for a totally different view of Kuala Lumpur.

Sri Maha Mariamman Temple 163 Jalan Tun HS Lee, Chinatown Train: Putra Line Pasar Seni Station

Surrounded by flower vendors and filled with statues, the Sri Maha Mariamman is Kuala Lumpur's oldest and richest Hindu temple. Inside you'll find coconuts, flowers and incense left by devotees, and outside you'll find colorful murals and ornate columns. Leave your shoes at the entrance if you go in, or stand outside to admire the 25 foot high pyramid tower filled with statues of Hindu gods.
