Festivals in Kota Kinabalu

Kota Kinabalu festivals offer a glimpse into the
local culture. The diversity of the festivals reflects the melting pot
of cultures that are found in the area. Malaysia blends old and new and the festivals reflect this fusion
of generations. Kota Kinabalu is the capital of
Sabah and is a vibrant city, making it a good venue to enjoy the festivals that are held in the area.
Kota Kinabalu Jazz Festival
The Kota Kinabalu Jazz festival is held every year by the Rotary Club and Society of Performing Arts. The first festival was held in 2007 and since then it has been a yearly event which draws crowds of over 2000 people. The event showcases performers from all over the world including America, Korea, Hong Kong and England. The festival is held to promote Kota Kinabalu and music. The festival also provides both local and international musicians an opportunity to share their music ideas. Workshops offer educational opportunities for performers. The festival is usually 2 days long and previous venues have included the Sutera Harbor Marina Club. Performers at this event have included Jonathon Tse, Six2Eight, Rimba and Nah Youn Sun. There is an admission fee
Sabah Festival
Sabah Festival takes place annually at the beginning of March and celebrates local cultures and traditions. Dance and music performances follow traditions which have been passed down from generation to generation. Crafts such as wood carvings are on sale. This festival leads up to Harvest festival.
Harvest Festival
Harvest Festival is held by the Kazdan and Dusun tribes to mark the end of the paddy harvest season. During this festival there is traditional dancing and traditional food is eaten. Since 1987 Kota Kinabalu Yatch Club has hosted yacht and boat races during the festival. The races are an opportunity for sailors to meet other sailors and the races facilitate international participation in the festival proceedings.
Kinabalu International Climbathon
Kinabalu International Climbathon falls at the end of August although dates may vary from year to year. Participants climb 21 miles up Mount Kinabalu. Internationals can participate and this event attracts world renowned mountain runners. It is known as one of the world's toughest mountain races. The Sabbah tourism board organizes this event.
Malaysia Water Festival
Malaysia Water Festival is held in various areas of Malaysia and is organized by the tourism board to promote tourism and water sports. Water sports include jet skiing and kayaking. Canoe races are held with prizes going to the winners. The festival is held in April and continues throughout the month.
