Edit ThisA list of Kotabharu must do's is not limited to sightseeing. Kotabharu is a city in the Southeast Asian country of Malaysia. Within Malaysia, it is in the northeastern part of the Malaysian peninsula. It is a large city, with a population which is approaching half a million inhabitants.
1. Visit MosquesAmong the most obvious of the Kotabharu must-do’s is to visit some of the many mosques. The majority of the population in this particular city is Muslim. The Islamic principles are performed vigilantly by almost everybody. For example, there are prayer calls which bring the entire city to a complete stand still while prayer is carried out. It is also reasonably common to receive a fine for inappropriate dress. In common with many other mosques, the examples in this city are quite spectacular but make sure you observe all the regulations and customs when visiting them.
2. Go ShoppingIn common with other parts of Southeast Asia. most notably Singapore, Kotabharu is a good place to go for shopping. Particularly appropriate places include Pasar Siti Khadijah and Kotabharu Trade Center. The former is a market where many vendors sell a wide variety of different wares; the latter is a modern and extremely large shopping mall. The city is also home to a number of other shopping centers.
3. Enjoy SCUBA DivingWreck diving is a relatively recent activity in Kotabharu but worthy of inclusion on a list of Kotabharu must-do’s. The major attraction here is the IJN Awazisan Maru, which was a Japanese ship that sank during fighting in the Pacific during War War II. As is the case with many other good wreck dives, the site itself provides an extremely good environment for a wide variety of sea life. The warm climate in the area is another factor that makes diving in the region a good activity.
4. Taste Buds EnjoymentAnother worthwhile activity for the tourist who is visiting the town of Kotabharu is to sample the local cuisine. The area is well-known for its wide array of good local food. Good quality dishes are available from a large number of street vendors. The prices tend to be extremely cheap and make the streets in the area rich with many different scents and smells. Eating in some of these is another of the Katabharu-must do’s.
5. Visit the Old Royal PalaceA visit to Katabharu cannot be complete without visiting the old royal palace. The palace has a unique architecture and the sultan still resides here. Please note that it is not possible to view the palace inside, but excellent views are available from the outside.
