Despite the Islamic conservatism of the region that frowns upon excessive exhibition of flesh, Kotabharu beaches are fun and happening places, full of gorgeous powdery sand and clean sparkling water. Local people have had to battle erosion of the beaches by strong surf, with wave breakers constructed of boulders being erected along the shoreline. Be aware that certain beaches have more or less disappeared as a result of the erosion and anti-erosion strategies.

The Beach of Passionate Love

Perhaps the most famous of Kotabharu beaches, the Beach of Passionate Love is full of food stalls serving delicious local seafood and the cool breeze that is a great relief to tourists. The only problem here is that swimming is potentially dangerous due to the strong currents. This beach was originally named "PCP Beach" but later changed perhaps due to the chemical connotations.

Pantai Dasar Sabak

The Japanese landed here in 1941 to mount their invasion of Malaya (as it was then known) but thankfully, this beach has become a lot safer since then. Nearly 13 km away from Khotabharu, Pantai Dasar Sabak also refers to the a nearby quaint little fishing village where tourists can observe traditional Malay life and buy great souvenirs from a whole range of shops. Swimming is possible off this very best of Khotabharu beaches in the cool blue sea, as are snorkeling, sailing, surfing, boating and windsurfing. The more sedentary traveler can indulge in some serious sunbathing instead. The surrounding landscape is truly beautiful, consisting of verdant countryside and picturesque scenery into which exciting excursions are possible. The dominant cuisine in Pantai Dasar Sabak is excellent seafood and fish so these are must-tries. Most tourists agree that this is the place to go for beach-related fun.
