Transport
There are a variety of options for getting around while you are in Johor Bahru. The public transport system is limited but buses are available. Bus stops are not clearly marked and do not run on schedule. Taxi's are a viable source of transport however prices for trips have to be negotiated. Be wary of being overcharged and it is advisable to try and catch a taxi away from major tourist areas. Another option is to rent a car. The city can be traveled by walking but there are not clearly marked areas where pedestrians can walk. The traffic in the city center is heavy and chaotic. Try avoid traveling in rush hour traffic.
Shopping
There is an abundance of shopping in Johor Bahru and there are many shopping malls to chose from. Bargain hunting is popular and in particular bargains can be found for electronics and Malaysian specialties. Due to the mix of different cultures unique articles are available. The architecture of some of the shopping malls is noteworthy.

Johor Bahru is an important industrial city in Malaysia with electronics and ship building being important parts of the economy. Tourism forms part of it's economy as Johor Bahru is a gateway to Singapore. Shopping contributes to Johor Bahru's economy.
Food
Food is available at a reasonable price and there is a variety of menu options to chose from. Malay, Chinese, Indian and Western food is available. Make sure that you check the cost of your meal before ordering. You can dine at a budget street side store or order a more expensive dish at an up market restaurant.
Safety
Be wary of thieves trying to steal your handbag and keep a look out for pickpockets. Be cautious of thieves on motor bikes. Petty theft is more prevalent than violent crimes. Do not walk around the city alone and be careful if you are going out at night. Avoid carrying around large amounts of money or valuable items. If you have to carry anything valuable make sure it is not visible. Try to keep small notes of money to pay for items when shopping in markets. Don't wear excessive jewelry. Be wary of strangers.
