Getting There in Johor Bahru
Edit ThisTourists trying to reach Johor Bahru have a host of travel and transportation options from which they can choose.
Plane
Travelers flying into Johor Bahru generally arrive at
Senai International Airport, which sits approximately 17 miles outside
the city. The airport offers service from such major carriers as
Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia and Firefly Airlines. A continuous series of
shuttles and taxis transports travelers from the airport to Johor Bahru.
Boat
Travelers originating from the Indonesian islands of
Batam and Bintan can catch ferries to Johor Bahru on a daily basis. The
ride from each location only lasts approximately 90 minutes. The
Malaysian resort region known as Desaru runs daily ferries to Johor
Bahru as well.
Train
Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTM) trains feed into
Johor Bahru’s rail station on a daily basis, originating from various
regions of Malaysia, as well as Singapore. While traveling by train
remains an inexpensive means of transportation, it has its drawbacks. For instance, the KTM trains are notoriously slow and run at a
relatively infrequent rate.
Car
Tourists can drive to Johor Bahru from Singapore via
The Causeway or Second Link, two major thoroughfares which connect
Malaysia and neighboring Singapore. Make sure you have local currency,
as many of the roads in and around Johor Bahru require toll fees. While
the major airports in the region offer car rental services, crossing
into the Malaysian border from Singapore in a rented car is generally
not allowed by such companies.
Bus
The majority of buses crossing into Johor Bahru from Singapore utilize The Causeway. Passenger fares are nominal at best, with some charging less than $1 per ride.
