Getting Around in Johor Bahru

Edit This

While the public transportation system in Johor Bahru leaves something to be desired, tourists can still find ways to successfully maneuver their way throughout the city.

Foot – Recent improvements to the city have made Johor Bahru an infinitely more pedestrian friendly tourist hotspot.  Improved city planning efforts have seen the addition of walkways and pedestrian-only zones throughout some of Johor Bahru’s most popular areas. Shopping districts, in particular, have opened themselves up to tourists sightseeing on foot.

Taxi – Taxis run with great frequency throughout Johor Bahru and serve as an affordable means of transportation for tourists, as most fares are considerably low for such a major city. In fact, many taxi drivers tend to ignore their meters and may prefer instead to barter.

Bus – The bus system in Johor Bahru offers affordable rates for travel throughout the city. Unfortunately, it is not the easiest system to master. Bus drivers rarely keep to a schedule and bus stops are not always clearly marked. Should you decide to travel by bus, you may wish to ask locals for advice before boarding a bus.

Car – Johor Bahru is not the type of city that’s best experienced from a car, although a car does come in handy when exploring the surrounding regions of Malaysia. Senai International Airport offers a host of car rental offices including Hertz, Avis, Orix and Pacific Rent-A-Car. Avis remains an attractive option for tourists as it offers free service for breakdowns and accidents, a true rarity in Malaysia. Within the city you can turn to such prominent companies like Hawk Rent-A-Car for your car rental needs.
