Ipoh Railway Station
Edit This
Built during the mining boom days, this once-impressive building with elements of Moorish architecture has often been referred to as the Taj Mahal of Ipoh. It was an important loading station for the rich ore in the valley, and as such was built to reflect this fact. It resembles its counterpart in Kuala Lumpur, hardly a surprise considering both were designed by the same architect, AB Hubback. It has a garden in front which is notable for being one of the places where the ipoh tree can still be seen. It also contains the once upper-class establishment of the Station Hotel, where patrons would sit on the wide verandahs and be served cooling drinks under whirling fans.
However conservation being a rather alien word, commercial pragmatism and time have not been kind to the once proud building, with its ground floor chopped up for commercial spaces. The building facade is old and tired, with flaking paint and grubby marks from the ever-frenetic traffic on the main road that it fronts on. Pay your respects to the grande old dame who have seen better days.
