St Michael's Institution
Edit ThisA grand old building, St Michael's Institution is a secondary high school built in 1912. It is administered as part of global La Sallian school network. The school grounds also contains the less impressive primary school which was added later. The school has produced its fair share of illustrious alumni active in the Malaysian political, arts, sports and entertainment fields.
During World War II, it was used as an administrative center by the Japanese, housing the
governor's residence, police department, treasury, air raid shelter and telephone exchange. With the end of more..

Sam Poh Tong and Nearby Temple Caves
Edit ThisSam Poh Tong (Cavern of the Triple Gems) is in Gunung Rapat, 5km from Ipoh. Sam Poh Tong's original temple was built in the 1890s by a Chinese monk who found the cave and decided to use it as a hermitage. The present construction dates from the 1950s, with 246 steps that lead to the caves and a panoramic view of Ipoh and surrounds. This temple and its sister temple Kek Loh Tong (located in the same hill range) are built directly into the limestone hillside and utilise the caves within as part of its architecture. Sam Poh Tong is said to be the largest of its kind in Malaysia. more..

Kek Lok Tong
Edit ThisKek Lok Tong (Cave of Great Happiness) is in the same vicinity as Sam Poh Tong, but is much younger, being built in the 1970s. It replicates more or less the same features as Sam Poh Tong, with cave statues, lotus ponds and a vegetarian restaurant. Because it is accessible through the Gunung Rapat housing area, it has a
cleaner, quieter and more cooling environment, which may suit some rather than the more popular Sam Poh Tong caves. Locals say it has the better scenic
cave view.

Kellie's Castle
Edit Thisphoto by: http://wai-yien.blogspot.com/
Kellie's Castle, also known as Kellie's Folly, is 20 minutes outside of Ipoh. This unfinished South-Indian style Gothic mansion was started by an eccentric Scottish planter named William Kellie Smith. Built in 1915, Smith decided to commemorate the birth of his longed for son and heir by building a castle. Smith brought over many Indian workers to complete his architectural dream, which was to include an indoor tennis court, an elevator and a rooftop courtyard for parties. It also included a tunnel to a nearby Hindu temple, reflecting Smith's fascination with Hinduism. This more..

D. R. Seenivasagam Park (Coronation Park)
Edit ThisFor those looking for family-friendly locations, or wishing to take time out in a quiet green spot, D. R. Seenivasagam Park (Coronation Park) is a reliable spot. Named after a former popular Ipoh politician, it contains recreational fields, an artificial lake filled with fish which you can feed from the walkway, a nursery and contains one of the last few surviving examples of the ipoh tree, from which the city takes its name. A small Japanese-style garden was recently added, complete with hungry koi in its ponds and other Japanese elements.

Ipoh Railway Station
Edit ThisIpoh Railway Station
Built during the mining boom days, this once-impressive building with elements of Moorish architecture has often been referred to as the Taj Mahal of Ipoh. It was an important loading station for the rich ore in the valley, and as such was built to reflect this fact. It resembles its counterpart in Kuala Lumpur, hardly a surprise considering both were designed by the same architect, AB Hubback. It has a garden in front which is notable for being one of the places where the ipoh tree can still be seen. It also contains the once upper-class establishment of the Station more..

Perak Tong
Edit ThisPerak Tong (Perak Cave) is located north of Ipoh in Gunung Tasek. Built in 1926, it is similar to the other cave temples in having Buddhist statues, with a 12.8m tall statue of a sitting Buddha as its centerpiece. Mystical cave paintings adorn the walls, and the temple has a commanding view of the countryside at the top of its 385 step staircase.
