Things to do

Edit This
Cameron Highlands is one of those places that you either hate or love. It mainly depends on your expectations of the place.

Most of the people who hated it are people who expected lots of entertainment or breathtaking scenery. The place is just not like that.

Yes, there are some nice views, such as at the tea plantations etc. But it is really nothing compared to the other tourist destinations in the world. And yes, there's a golf course, places for trekking, but again, it is nothing compared to the other places where you could do the same or more.

The true attraction of the place is its cozy, small-town, laid back atmosphere. You can only appreciate the place if you have slowed your spirit, and let yourself immerse in the local atmosphere.

Notice how few taxi drivers there are in the area (less than 20?), try to remember their faces, and see if you see them again. Notice how they sit around and chat all day. Notice how the some of the staff at your hotel are actually family members. Watch the hotel staff loaf away the afternoons, catch the shopkeeper napping in the shop.

And then you'll find yourself falling in love with the place, and not knowing how to explain that.

Eat drink and be merry!

Edit This

So many great places for snacks and tea.

Hang around hotel lounges with great views, or local coffeeshops. Have snacks or tea with your mate while chatting away, admiring the view, or you could even have a game of chess. It's a great way to spend the afternoons.

Check out the Eating Out section of this guide for more details.

House hunting

Edit This

Saw an intriguing road sign such as 'Moonlight Bungalow', when in a taxi or bus? Saw a mysterious house at the other side of the hill from your hotel room?

Explore up the road on foot to find the house. Indulge in the sense of mystery and wonder at these houses. It's like in a gothic novel. Occasionally you do stumble onto some scenic spot that touches your heart.

Many of the houses there are the holiday accomodations owned by wealthy Malaysians or Singaporeans who do not live in the area. Many of these houses are empty, which just adds to the mystery.

Let more..

Ascend Gunung Brinchang

Edit This

Hike up Gunung Brinchang, the highest peak in Cameron Highlands, for a breathtaking view of the area.

Alternatively, you could also bargain with a taxi driver to take you up in the evenings for a lovely night view of the city lights in Ipoh, especially nice on a starry night.

A local told me they often do that for a romantic boost on first dates, or for special occasion such as someone's birthday, or graduation.

Gather local stories

Edit This

Talk to the locals (particularly Taxi drivers) to find out about local stories and urban myths.

Gather stories about the famous celebrities who have visited the place in the seventies, or about the American tourists who went into the forest and were never found, or about the haunted hotel rooms in town.

Most of the locals will be more than eager to share these stories with you.
