Edit ThisSituated next to the Presidential Palace, this temple was the temple of the former Lao Royal family. Formerly, the temple was the home of the emerald Buddha, that was taken back by the Thais in 1778 and now resides in Bangkok.
The emerald Buddha, firstly, resided at a city named Lampang in northern Thailand and was in territory of the Lanna Kingdom. In 1472, a King of the Lanna Kingdom named Tiloka Raja took the emerald Buddha to the capital of the Kingdom named Chiang Mai.

That Luang
Edit ThisThe most famous landmark of Vientiane is That Luang (Royal Stupa) which was constructed in 1566 by King Setthatirat and restored in 1935. The stupa is situated 3km north of the centre of the city.

Lao Revolutionary Museum
Edit ThisThe museum is housed in a large French colonial building and shows a collection of artefacts, photographs and paintings of the history of the Lao People's Revolution. The English translations to photo captions are often unintentionally funny.

Wat Xieng Khouang
Edit ThisBuddah Park is situated about 25 minutes drive outside the centre of the city. Although not an old temple, it is nevertheless fascinating for its huge structures that combine Buddhist and Hindu Philosophies.

Morning Market
Edit ThisAt the Talat Sao (Morning Market) you can find all kinds of different shops. It's well known for jewelry , clothes etc. This is also a good place to change money officially. Outside there's a food market with cheap road restaurants. Here you can change your money on the black market, but take care while changing.

Victory Monument details
Edit ThisThe Victory Monument is situated at the north end of Lane Xang Avenue and resembles Paris' Arc de Triomphe - as it is sometimes known. During the day, the monument can be climbed and makes an excellent vantage point of the city.
