You can also reach Luang Namtha by road from Houay Xai, (Thai border) (even easier when the new road is finished), and by boat by going down the Mekong for a couple of hours and then up the Namtha river.The boat trip takes two days, the night in between you sleep at Ban Kongkham, a little village on the river, where you are lodged in the boatmen's house. One of the nicest boat trips I have ever done. I realise this site doesn't like links ( not sure why), but if you Google "Luang Namtha' with the search setting on 50, you'll find my site on that province, with about 400 photographs about the ethnic diversity in the province.
