Some tourists call at West Timor on their way from Indonesia to Australia or independent East Timor. Kupang is the biggest city on the island and is not too bad to hang around for a few days.  However to make the most out of a visit to West Timor one has to get out of the city. Rural West Timor has a scenery quite unique in Indonesia, with lots of traditional villages and colorful markets among the arid, rugged landscape. It is also a very traditional area culturally (more so than East Timor), with plenty of people wearing traditional, handwoven ikat sarings, and the markets often selling interesting handicrafts. Outside Kupang tourists are very rare, and this is an excellent area to get off the beaten track.
