Things to do in Lake Toba

Edit This

Located in the center of Sumatra, Lake Toba is the world’s largest volcanic lake. It was created by a massive volcanic eruption that occurred about 74,000 years ago. Today, the lake is one of the top tourist destinations in Southeast Asia, and it offers a lot of interesting attractions and activities.

Cultural Sites

Start with Ambarita, which is famous for its stone chairs. About 300 years old, these chairs depict the glory and horror of Batak history. The first two sets of chairs were used as a conference area by Batak kings when they were passing judgment on prisoners. When a guilty sentence was reached, the assembly moved to the third set of chairs, which had a central stone execution block where the prisoners would be executed. To learn more about Batak culture, you have to pay a visit to Museum Huta Solon Simanindo. Other than exploring the traditional Batak houses, you will also enjoy the puppet Batak dancing performances, which you can participate in. Throughout Samosir Island, you will find lots of traditional Batak houses and gravesites, which are interestingly suspended above ground.

The Town of Tuk Tuk

If you want to go shopping, you should make a trip to Tuk Tuk, which is the main tourist center in Samosir Island and Tomok. This is the place where most locals live. You can see the grave of King Sidabutur, who introduced Christianity to the Batak people. If you are interested in learning something new and unique, you can join a woodcarving course and learn how to make your own souvenirs.

Natural Attractions

To get beautiful views of Lake Toba and Tuk Tuk, you can take a short climb up the small mountain that is located in the middle of the island. About 40 km from Tuk Tuk, there is a hot volcanic spring called Air Panas, which means “hot water.” Contrary to what the name suggests, it's not very hot, and you can have a delightful time soaking and relaxing in the water. You can also cool off by going swimming in Lake Toba. The water is a bit chilly when you get deeper. Since the water is deep, some hotels have their own swimming areas along the lake to ensure the safety of their customers, especially the children.

Festival

If you are in Lake Toba during the month of July, you will have the chance to witness the Lake Toba festival. This famous festival will feature interesting events such as Dragon Boat races, canoe races, swimming competition from Parapat to Tuk Tuk and traditional dancing.
