Centered within the island of Sumatra is Lake Toba--a meeting of waves and ash. Declared the largest volcanic lake in the world, it is the source of much fascination. Batak Museum

Nestled within thatched roofs and sharp angles is the Batak Museum. Located just beyond the shores of Lake Toba, this architectural marvel (its dark woods are stark against the jungle beyond, its design is intricate) is filled with artifacts and culture. Discover handcrafted ships, masks and weaponry. This ever-growing complex (buildings are found in the villages of Tomok, Simanindo and Permatang Purba) is not to be overlooked. No reservations are needed.

Huta Bolon Museum

Journey to the northern curl of the island to find the Huta Bolon Museum. This former palace has been reinvented; and, though it may appear too small to house any artifacts of interest, it is instead a grand tribute to a fallen king. Brass works, surprising European-inspired pottery and carvings will fill your morning. Come early Monday through Saturday to see the traditional dance of the Simanindo people performed. Shows begin at 10:30 a.m. after the museum opens.

Stone Chair Village

Though lacking the expected setting of Lake Toba museums, the Stone Chair Village is an experience like no other. Massive, hand-carved chairs wait in a circular ring. It was here, in the village of Ambarita, that tribal elders debated the fate of their people and their prisoners. Visitors now have the opportunity to view the ring, as well as the collection of Batak houses preserved beyond. This outdoor museum is not to be forgotten. Weather will determine all tours, however. Schedule well.

All Lake Toba museums wish to offer more than the lake itself. They wish, instead, to explain the rich heritage of the island--and they do.
