Festivals in Lake Toba
Edit ThisLake Toba (Danau Toba), is located in the treeless mountains of
North Sumatra, 906 meters above sea level. The lake was formed by a
volcanic eruption that occurred about 75,000 years ago. Since,
additional eruptions have occurred. It is not only the largest lake in
southeast Asia, but the deepest in the world. It is so large, it's
broken into three districts, Simalungun, Parapat and Ambarita. In the
middle of this lake there is an island called Samosir Island. No matter
where you are in the area, visitors will find beautiful cultural
events and festivals taking place throughout the year.
Lake Toba Festival
One of the most popular festivals is the Lake Toba
Festival. Breathtaking colors envelop the area, based on the
inhabitant’s traditional customs. It's easy to see the great
enthusiasm the locals have toward the celebration. The weeklong festival includes ethnic events that embrace traditional singing and
dancing. However, the canoe race is the main event, where villages
compete to cross the lake first. The race is not the only
competition that occurs during the festival. There's also horse racing,
water sports and additional boat races. Beyond this, cultural
performances and contemporary shows are held for the large crowds that
attend the festival. A large amount of local art and
crafts are displayed for sale, and native food and drink are available
at stalls.
Krakatau Festival
Krakatau Festival lasts for a week in length and memorializes the
volcanic eruption that took place in 1883. More than 35,000 people
lost their lives during the explosion. While touring,
visitors will see the many monuments sprinkled in the area to
commemorate the event. One of the most popular is the Krakatau
Monument. The monument is an image of a large metal buoy. The buoy
washed up on the Lampung Bay shores after the incident occurred. Recreational activities take place throughout the week, which include
various boat races dressed in traditional colors. In addition, kite
and foot races are held for those who have a competitive urge.
Religious Celebrations
Christianity is a popular religion in the area, therefore Christmas is celebrated with eagerness. Delicious home meals, fireworks and cultural celebrations occur during the religious festivity. Carol singing, card exchanging and Biblical pageants take place throughout the communities. Following Christmas, New Year's, Ramadan, Chinese New Year's and Idul Fitri can be experienced, as all are prominent celebrations.
