Walk into Jakarta’s Grandest MuseumsThe best way to appreciate a country you are visiting is actually learning about its rich history and culture. This is exactly what you will get when you visit Jakarta’s museums, all abounding in rich art, both ancient and contemporary.
Make your first stop the Museum Nasional, which is a museum housing several Indonesian prehistoric, archaeological and ethnographic artifacts. If you remember, one of the world’s prehistoric men, the Java man, was found in this country. For a ticket price of 750 RP, you will get to witness intricate ancient Hindu Javanese art and Southeast Asian ceramics.
Another notable museum is the Museum Bank Mandiri, which is found in the Old Town. This museum is very reminiscent of the Dutch colonial era in Jakarta. Here one can witness the history of the creation of Bank Mandiri, different Rupiah bank notes that have evolved over time, and see how the Dutch provided monetary service based on race.
To complete to your museum tour, visit the National Monument, or the Monas, a 137 meter monument located at the middle of Freedom Square. You can see the exhilarating view of the city from the top. In the basement are various dioramas that depict Indonesia’s history. If you’d like to explore the lobby, pay 2500 RP, but if you’re looking to explore the top, pay 7500 RP.
Visit Ancol Dream ParkThis dream park consists of a Fantasy World for the young at heart. Also, you will the Southeast Asia’s largest aquarium, known as Sea World. There’s an Ocean Park too, with a beach, hotel, resorts, marina and inviting dining spots. This is the perfect place to visit if you are with your family.
Indulge in Indonesian Gastronomic PleasuresTrying out local food is one of the highlights of a good vacation. Indonesia is home to many great dishes that may taste very different from your Western preferences. Nevertheless, they are flavorful and sumptuous, and definitely worth trying. Nasi Ulam is a rice meal cooked in coconut milk. It is served with fried minced beef, and other toppings like cucumber, chili sauce and sweet friend tempe. The Dutch have taught the Indonesians to make beef spare rib soup, and the locals have made it into an original Indonesian dish by adding spices and Asian flavors.
