Getting Around in Jakarta
Edit This
Getting around Jakarta can sometimes be difficult due to traffic jams and the lack of efficient public transportation. For short distances, walking is usually the best option since it will get you faster to your destination. However, if walking is not an option, other options do exist.
Getting around Jakarta by Taxi
Taxis are usually the fastest and safest way to travel around the Indonesian capital. The most reputable company is named Blue Bird and their vehicles can be found throughout the city. Always ask taxi drivers to turn on the meter or, at worst, agree on a price before the trip, as some drivers are known for grossly overcharging tourists.
Jakarta Busway Service
Busways are buses which run on dedicated lanes. They only stop at the designated Busway stations where you must pay the fare before embarking on the bus. The vehicles are modern and usually fast, making the Busway a good, cheaper alternative to the taxis.
Normal Buses in Jakarta
Tourists should consider the normal buses as a last resort. Not only are they uncomfortable for Westerners due to cramped seats and a very low ceiling, they can also sometimes be unsafe due to pickpockets targeting Caucasian passengers. Normal buses can be found throughout the city.
The Bajaj, or the Indonesian Tuk-tuk
This is Jakarta’s version of the Thai tuk-tuk. In other words, it is a motorcycle fitted with a small passenger cabin at the back. While fun to ride, they can be relatively expensive and unsafe.
