History in Tanjung Pinang
Edit ThisGovernment
Tanjung Pinang is the largest city in the province of Bintan Island, and aside from being the city’s capital, it is branded as the center of administration in the Raiu Islands, which is part of the province of Indonesia. It has become a place where administrators of the country meet and plan for its betterment and service improvement.
Historical Events
500 years ago, Bintan became the political center of the country, which was when Portuguese triumphed with their quest in the battle of Malacca. When the Sultan of Malacca (Sultan Mahmud) formed a revolutionary resistance against the aggressive conqueror Portugal, Bintan became an icon in Indonesia’s rich history.
After this historic event took place, the southern Malaysian province Johor Sultante claimed the province of Bintan as its capital. The province of Tanjung Pinang has become a historic place and has contributed much to the culture of the Malays. After these events unfolded, Bintan became a very strong business trading harbor, catching the eyes of Western, Chinese, Regional and Indian traders alike. Since then, it has become a migrating place especially for the Chinese, which was very similar to the Malacca’s development as a regional authority some three centuries back.
Cultural Development
During the historic battle of Malacca, the proclaimed national hero of the Indonesians – Raja Haji Fisabililah, met his end at the hands of the Dutch in the year 1784. He was known to have a place on the island of Penyegat, which was off Tanjung Pinang, and there he was hailed as a renowned Malayan king. As recognition for his greatness and contribution to the Malayan culture, the Raja Haji Fisabillah Monument was built to honor his memory.
Landmarks
Aside from Tanjung Pinang’s popularity and barter strength, it is also famous for recreation and entertainment. Malay’s love for music and stage plays were celebrated and relived in the cultural center of Tanjung Pinang. Aside from plays and music, other performances like common festivals are celebrated in this city. In the outer portion of central Tanjung Pinang, a small town called Senggarang is home to majestic Buddhist temples.
