Festivals in Tanjung Pinang

Many countries throughout Indonesia have unique and entertaining festivals throughout the year and the Tanjung Pinang Festivals are no exception. Tanjung Pinang is located on the Bintan Island, which is one of the islands that makes up the Riau Island chain of Indonesia. In addition, Tanjung Pinang is the capital of Bintan Island. The beautiful city of Tanjung Pinang is quite renowned for stage performances of both Malay dances and music. There are recurring music and dance festivals throughout the year. But this is one of many festivals held in Tanjung Pinang throughout the year. Here are some other important and special events, which take place in this vibrant and traditional city.

New Year's Day

Celebrated on the first of January is the celebration of New Year’s Day. This is considered to be a public holiday and most of the celebration takes place on New Year’s Eve and lasts into the early morning hours of January 1. There are many celebrations, which take place in neighborhood streets and accented by colorful firework displays. Special shows and entertainments are typically planned for the New Year's as well. Many of the children like to ring in the New Year with noise makers and paper horns.

Chinese New Year

Similar to the New Year’s Day festivity, Tanjung Pinang celebrates the Chinese New Year on February 7. The Chinese New Year is also a public holiday and is observed throughout Indonesia. This occasion includes many celebrations and festivals that encompass Chinese culture. There are traditional Chinese performances, inclusive of dances and musical displays. Also many fairs and booths are set up for people to purchase Chinese goods. Finally, the beautiful street parades consisting of brightly colored dragons and lions wind their way down the parade route.

Independence Day

The Indonesia National Independence Day is celebrated annually throughout Indonesia on August 7. Many communities, including Tanjung Pinang, celebrate their independence with proud displays, depicting their heritage and culture.  Traditional carnivals, sporting events and cultural performances contribute to the festivities of Indonesia. At the Merdeka Presidential Palace a flag-raising ceremony takes places as well.

Tanjung Pinang International Dragon Boat Festival

Finally, on October 1, the world famous Dragon Boat Festival takes place in Tanjung Pinang every year. Since 1979 the Pinang International Dragon Boat Festival has been held on the Tanjung Pinang seaside, which faces the Penyengat Island.   The vibrant and gorgeous boats seen at this festival are just breathtaking. Tourists also have the opportunity to not only view these attractive boats, but see traditional cultural performances, participate in canoe races, diving and swimming contests, as well.
